Samsung offers $4m prize for app development contest9 Jul 2012

Samsung has launched a competition for developers to create an application for the Samsung Galaxy Note and Galaxy Tab, with a total prize fund of $4.08 million (£2.63 million) on offer.
In addition, the winning app developers in the Samsung Smart App Challenge 2012 will receive marketing support to promote the most innovative apps chosen throughout the content period.
The prize fund will be divided amongst 80 winning apps in a number of categories, including best game and best use of the Samsung S Pen in app development, which is a pen-input technology used on the Galaxy Note.
To take part, developers need to register on the Smart App Challenge website and once developed, make their app available for download on the Samsung app store. Winners are judged by number of downloads, and for the S Pen category, put to a panel of judges to select the winners.
Samsung UK and Ireland telecommunications and networks vice president Simon Stanford said: “At Samsung we want to provide opportunities and support for the development of innovative apps that make use of our hardware technology.
“The Samsung Smart App Challenge 2012 is a real opportunity for both established and budding app developers to secure funding and marketing support. It’s an exciting project and we’re looking forward to seeing what these developers create.”
